Frankenstein (Dover Thrift Editions: Classic Novels)

Few creatures of horror have seized readers’ imaginations and held them for so long as the anguished monster of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The story of Victor Frankenstein’s terrible creation and the havoc it caused has enthralled generations of readers and inspired countless writers of horror and suspense. Considering the gothic novel’s enduring success, it is remarkable that it began merely as a whim of Lord Byron’s.
“We will each write a story,” Byron announced to his next-door neighbors, Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin and her lover, the romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.
The illustrious poets failed to complete their ghost stories, but Mary Shelley rose supremely to the challenge. With Frankenstein, she succeeded admirably in the task she set for herself: to create a story that, in her own words, “would speak to the mysterious fears of our nature and awaken thrilling horror — one to make the reader dread to look round, to curdle the blood, and quicken the beatings of the heart.”

A masterpiece of science fiction, Frankenstein was published anonymously in 1818 and then revised in 1831 with Mary Shelley as author. The classic novel is famously subtitled The Modern Prometheus and based on the Ancient Greek myth of Prometheus, as both Victor Frankenstein and Prometheus developed science that gives humans immortality. The book has inspired numerous movie, theatrical, and television adaptations.A top 100 Great American Read, it’s one of the best-loved and most influential works ever published.Mary Shelley, also known as Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, is the daughter of political philosopher William Godwin and feminist activist and philosopher Mary Wollstonecraft.

    THIS IS THE BEST BOOKS.
This English edition of “Frankenstein” offers a clear and faithful reading of Mary Shelley’s classic. The narrative preserves its original intensity, combining science, psychological terror, and moral reflection. The development of Victor Frankenstein and his creature is well presented, with language that remains accessible even for intermediate English readers. This edition is suitable for anyone wanting to experience the text in its original language without losing readability. It is an essential work for its thematic depth and literary value.

    CAPTURED ME
I can’t say I loved reading Frankenstein but once started I couldn’t abandon it. We all have our internal voices but those of Victor and his monster were intense, brilliant, and tragic.

Classic novel that was required summer reading in 1967 for me. I bought it for my 14 year old grand daughter for reading in Iceland.

    Somewhat disappointed
Thought it would be better based on reviews. It works, just not as well as I’d hoped. Still usable though. For what it’s worth.

  9. Amazon Customer

Not the same cover as the picture but still the original story so it doesn’t really matter.

What I liked: -Foldable cardboard packaging- Books received in perfect condition- 100% recyclable material usedWhat I disliked: – prime branding was missing for prime order, but I am sure seller will improve it in future.

  11. Katrin Freytag

  12. Sara

    Livro ótimo. Recomendo a leitura.

  13. Larry

When reading the book my thoughts kept turning to the AI systems we are building and whether they will feel alone and isolated and seek revenge for their creation.
