    A gentle, grounding read.
This little collection of Zen stories was a quiet joy to read. They are slow paced and beautiful reminders of who we are, or who we might become when we slow down and simply be. Two stories really stayed with me, one about a loyal donkey, who spent his life serving without question, until one day, he simply walked away. “He wasn’t tied. He just thought he was” , that one hit deep. The other reminder was “questions only become dangerous when we leave them in the dark too long.” It is a short and pleasant read, full of quiet truths that gently poke something in you.

Help to Navigate Your Emotional Landscape in a Thoughtful and Peaceful Manner.
I recently finished reading The Zen of Letting Go and I found it to be a really beautiful exploration of letting go and finding peace through self acceptance. The story of the monkey holding onto an overripe plum really struck me. It served as a powerful reminder of how we often cling to things that no longer serve us. The girl struggling with her breath was another part that resonated deeply. It highlighted the importance of being true to oneself and not just performing to meet others’ expectations. I appreciated how the old master guided us to explore our fears and habits that might hold us back, inviting us to create space for personal growth.Another part I enjoyed was about the goat approaching the bridge. It was so relatable. It really showcased the struggles we face when moving beyond our comfort zones. The old master’s bowls of water for the goat felt like a metaphor for compassion during uncertain times. There was also a young boy who embodied that quiet observation of life. I felt that he represented those moments when we have questions but don’t know how to voice them. This book really emphasized mindfulness and self reflection which suggests that transformation doesn’t always require a big leap but instead a slow and thoughtful crossing. The Zen of Letting Go also brought attention to me the importance of shadows and the quieter aspects of life. I loved how the thoughtful monk found meaning in observing shadows. It reminded me that letting go is often about softening into myself and accepting parts that don’t always shine. I also spotted other themes like forgiveness and emotional release which were also abundantly found through out this wonderful book such as the little stories touching on unresolved feelings. I found myself to be in a wonderful state after reading this book I believe because these stories were such an enriching journey into self compassion and growth. I would definitely recommend it and so I am giving this book a 5 Star review for anyone who may be looking for something to help them navigate their emotional landscape in a thoughtful and peaceful manner.

    Calming
This was a great book to read at night right before going to bed. The stories are the perfect length and very soothing. I felt more relaxed and more peaceful after reading each story. I liked the reflections at the end of each story as well to see how the stories can relate to real life experience. I recommend!

    Good to Know!
This book is like 30 gentle mini stories that help you let go of stress, stop overthinking, and feel peaceful. Each story is short, kind, and easy to understand, perfect when you need a quick moment of calm. I think that when you learn to let go, you make room for peace. One little story at a time can change a heavy day into a lighter one.

  6. jeag7

    Peaceful, meditative stories
The 30 stories in this collection are serene little meditations. On the surface, they’re about mundane situations and conversations in the setting of a traditional zen monastery. But the stories also each have a deeper meaning that resonates like a singing bowl. It’s kind of like a book of koans. Lovely reading material. I personally didn’t care for the “book club” style of reflection questions following each story, but I can see how others might find that to be contemplative and useful.

  7. The Twin Flames

  10. Jacky Spear

The Zen of Letting Go is a beautifully calming book filled with short stories that feel more like quiet meditations than lessons. I loved the combination of gentle storytelling, journaling prompts, and poetic reflections – it’s equally soothing and empowering but without being preachy. Some stories resonate more than others, but the overall tone is peaceful, thoughtful, and comforting. A lovely book to keep by your bedside or gift to someone needing calm and clarity.

  11. Kalian27

This book is a calming collection of Zen parables that encourage release, stillness, and kindness toward yourself. Each story feels like a pause button for the soul, reminding you that healing doesn’t demand struggle—just presence and quiet acceptance. Thoughtful, soothing, and deeply restorative.

  12. Shay

This book was exactly what I needed. Each Zen story is short, gentle, and full of meaning without feeling preachy. The writing is simple yet powerful, and I found myself pausing often to reflect on my own thoughts and patterns. That being said, there are other Zen Story books out there with more stories and cheaper.

  13. Ann

Far from dogmatic, some good ideas in the book to help raise and sustain a positive mood and find joy in nature and simple everyday experiences.
