Buyer Beware–New Stock Inferior Quality
I am a long time customer of DII and have purchased a variety of DII items for decades. Recently I wanted to replace my DII Basic Everyday Ribbed dark green placemats that are still serviceable, but somewhat worn after many years use. I ordered a new pack of 6 DII Basic Everyday Ribbed Placemats in August, 2025. They are identical to the dozens I have purchased in the past for my home & my former business–attractive and easy care–practical for every day use in my busy household.I wanted 12 placemats. I reordered the same item twice in October, 2025–returned both sets due to quality issues. The new stock is inferior when compared with my previous purchases. The ribbing appears similar, but not as closely woven as previous. The dye is not stable–streaks appear when washed in cold water as directed and the placemats shrink, rumple & fray. I hope quality control returns to the DII company, but for now–buyer beware!

UPDATE 2024: These are still going strong through 5 years of abuse. Not a single one has started to unravel or fall apart at all. We even lost two of the red ones outside through the winter. We eventually found them in the spring, sent them through the wash, and they were as good as new. A little more faded than the others, but you would never guess that they spent 4 months under the snow.UPDATE 2021: We’ve been using these for over 2 years now. We bought another set in black, and have been switching them out whenever the others are in the wash. They do stop bleeding In the washer eventually, so we just throw them in with the everyday laundry. They have not started unraveling or falling apart at all. Which is amazing since we are not easy on these whatsoever. They’ve gone from just being place mats to being used for anything and everything; under dog food and water, under the coffee pot, used to set hot pans on, for wet dishes as a drying mat, under coloring books for painting, you name it and They’ve been used for it. The colors have faded, but I expected nothing less from constant abuse over the years. All in all these are great and last forever.ORIGINAL 2019: We absolutely love these. We’re a family of 6 with 4 messy kids, and we use these every day for every meal. They are very sturdy. Nice and thick, not flimsy at all. They get washed every couple of days, and so far no unraveling. They did shrink a little after the initial wash, but they’re 100% cotton. Cotton will ALWAYS shrink in the wash. There’s nothing you can do about that. And anyone that gets mad about it is just ignorant, and should buy polyester place mats instead because polyester does not shrink. I put these in the washer with cold water, and lay them flat on the table to dry so I dont have to iron them. But even in cold water, do not wash these with anything else, unless you dont mind the color bleed to the rest of your laundry. They bleed like crazy.Another thing, is these placemats may not be strictly for special occasions or parties if thats what you’re buying them for, they are not perfectly rectangle. Some are better than others, some look like they were made at a bit of an angle. For my family, we think it adds a bit of character, and don’t mind it at all. In fact we’re saving up for another set in a different color for some variety during holidays, but if you’re picky about presentation, they may not be for you.
